These days, its easy to think you can find any recipe you desire online. The internet is practically exploding with recipe blogs and sites and many of the dishes look so good. So is it that simple? Well, sort of: there is indeed a whole lot of information online, some of it is outstanding, but how do you know you can trust the author? How do you know that the pretty pictures really represent tasty dishes, and that you’ll end up with your desired outcome? And where can you find not only recipes, but also tips, ideas how to solve common plant powered eating issues, conversion charts, allergy free options, etc.?
This is where Dreena’s cookbook comes to play. Dreena is an author of 5 cookbooks. 5, that’s right! To me, someone who managed to be successful in the oh so competitive arena of cookbooks authorship must know what they are talking about.
After reading through my copy of Dreena’s latest cookbook, Plant Powered Families, and “playing” with it for a while, it is clear to me why Dreena’s books are so successful.
Other than the recipes, which are awesome and I’ll talk about in a while, I like her attention to details, the short description before each dish to introduce it so you’ll know for what its a best fit, and the allergy free options and the variation options given in many of the recipes.
That and more, there’s a whole section called “Plant-Powered Challenges and Solutions” where Dreena discusses many common problems we all face with our kids, from picky eaters, through what to pack for their lunchboxes, to hosting plant powered kids parties. All from experience, as Dreena is a mother of 3 girls, so she must know these stuff…
Another great feature in Plant Powered Families is the sample 2 weeks meal plan, with a nutritional breakdown. It really helps to get your head around meal planning.
Plant Powered Families is of course 100% plant based (and BTW I think the Plant Powered name choice vs. Vegan for that matter is genius, as Vegan tends to scare people off sometimes) and it provides over 100 recipes, but other than that, it is also a whole foods recipe book, which is a total fit to my nutrition beliefs, so I am really enjoying it.
There’s also a very active Facebook community that is called Plant Powered Families, which I like 3 things about:
- The fact that it is a community and not just a website’s Facebook page, so anyone can post and ask questions etc.
- The fact that it is very active: I see many folks that may have a question about a certain recipe or wondering where should they start from etc. and they get almost immediate response. Other than the book related questions, there are many other vegan family related topics being discussed in the community and I enjoy seeing all the support.
- The enthusiasm the community members share to the recipes. Not a day goes by without someone posting something like: “I tries XYZ recipe from PPF, and it was a hit! even my little picky eater liked it! Dreena you rock!”
